Death and Taxes

I think taxes were trying to kill me this year. They sure gave it a good go. For the first time ever, for both my husband and I, we had to pay taxes. Mostly because of me working for myself. I'm double hit with FICA. In any case, we have a good tax guy; he helped us a lot and sent us home to find more write-offs (which we did). Still, this tax bill is for a not insignificant amount of (four digit) money. We can weather it but it sure does mean no vacation for us at all this year.

Self-employed folks get *fucked* on taxes. It's horrible.

Could your money guy set you up with a pay-estimated-taxes-quarterly-in-advance thingy? It'd still sting, of course, but not as much...

Yeah. He's going to send us stuff for that.

This is one of those things you have to learn the hard way when you become a full time freelance author.

I second the advice to set up a way to pay them quarterly (or at least set money aside quarterly). Brian and I did that when he was self employed as a proffesional poker player.

Uncle Sam and I have had a bit of a squabble going for a few years too. Uncle Sam seems to get his punches in regardless...
