cmpriest's book Wings to the Kingdom. Damn. You should go buy it as soon as you possibly can. It's pretty good.
I have succeeded. I have transferred my music to my PC. The saga is long and involved. It started as a desire to transfer music. It ended up with a new MacBook, a new external hard drive and a very dead iBook. I'll write it up in detail later.
