Winning even if I didn't....

Well. I just got one of the best rejections I've ever had from Peridot Books.

Jennifer -

I hate writing this letter.

I deeply regret to inform you that "Dark Epiphany" did not make the final cut for Volume 21 of Peridot Books. Please understand that we received nearly 500 submissions for this issue and narrowed that down to only 24 finalists. ALL of those finalists are strong, quality stories - any of which we would be pleased and honored to publish.

The final decision is made by comparing the stories, more with an eye toward issue balance than the merits of one story over another. Your tale is a GREAT piece, and I'm very very sorry that we can't use it.

For whatever it may be worth, we would like to include your name and the title of your story in the Honorable Mentions section of our fiction page. Feel free to use this as a recommendation of your work to other markets.

Again, my apologies. And good luck with your writing efforts.

I definitely count this as a win because it was speculative fiction work, it made it to the finals and the editor loved it. It was more of balance of stories. This sort of thing does happen. My response was:

Thank you for writing to let me know. I would be happy to be honorably
mentioned. If there are any criticisms of the piece you would like to also
share with me, I would be happy to listen. Never fear, I won't let this
keep me from submitting to you all again.

Patron wanted for Norwescon...

Alright. Enough people have asked me if I'm going to go to NorWesCon or not. I am. I want to go on Saturday, the 10th. But, as I'm going through one of my weirdo shy phases, I don't want to go by myself. Does anyone want to go with me? Better yet, anyone want to adopt me, protect me and introduce me around like a new favored pet? I am interested in say hello to a couple of people who have prodded me into going, checking out the dealers room, meeting anyone running a local LARP and generally getting myself into the fandom, gamer, con-going, geek, Ren faire, goth, etc... social circles that go to this sort of thing.

I am not a number!

Oh dear...

I think I'm going to have to turn in my 'Softie badge. I finally got a look at the creators of Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin in an article about them and their company. Holy Toledo, are they both ever cute! Especially Larry, though I certainly wouldn't boot Sergey out of bed for eating crackers. They are so much younger than I thought. Now, I know exactly who zunger is talking about when he mentions "Larry" or "Serge."
