In Defense of Your Inner 12 Year Old

Last night, we had friends, Matt and Lily, over to play Arkham Horror. Jeff bought the "Lurker on the Threshold" expansion and we were playing it for the first time. He pulled a unique item and read it aloud. I could not help myself. My inner 12 year old snerked and I glanced across the table at Matt. I saw him trying to hold his composure but he caught my look and we both busted up laughing. I mean really laughing like a couple of 12 year olds who just heard a dirty word in straight conversation. I laughed so hard and long that my sides hurt. So did Matt. Jeff and Lily were laughing, too.

The card? "Fire of Asshurbanipal."

Come on. How can you not laugh at that?

While we were calming down, Matt said something like, "Thank God! I thought I was the only one. I always feel like such an asshole when I laugh at something like that."

In retrospect, that thought makes me sad. Laughter is healthy, healing and necessary for life. It's good to laugh. If laughing at juvenile humor makes a person an asshole, well, I guess I'm at the top of the list. Ever since Matt and I once talked about the inner 12 year old laughing at statements like "It's my duty" weeks ago, I've stopped trying to hold back my laughter.

You know what? I'm a lot happier these days and I think my giving up on proper decorum is why. I like to laugh and so does my inner 12 year old. These days, we laugh together.
